Does It Hurt to Get a Dental Filling?

Cavities are holes and pits that form on the outermost layer of your tooth known as the enamel. Plaque and tartar are mainly responsible for cavity formation. When these aren’t removed through brushing and professional teeth cleaning, they will slowly erode the protective covering of your tooth. When this happens, dentists usually suggest dental fillings in Conroe.

dental filling is a procedure to remove the decayed parts of your tooth and fill it up with a tooth-colored composite material. If you’re worried about pain and if it’s the reason why you’re holding off, it pays to learn and understand the procedure.

The Dental Filling Procedure

Can You Avoid Dental Filling Pain?

To avoid pain, a local anesthetic is administered to numb the site. It will not sedate you. The most commonly used anesthetic is Lidocaine. This is done following three steps. First, your dentist will dry the area using a handheld tool that emits air or a piece of cotton.

Next, a gel is dabbed on the site to numb your gum tissues. Lastly, lidocaine is injected into your gum tissues. When your mouth is numb, you will not feel a thing! A dental filling is a completely painless procedure.

What Happens After the Procedure?

Once the procedure is over and the effects of the anesthesia start to wear off, it’s normal to feel a tingling sensation in your mouth. It’s also common for people to experience tooth sensitivity after a dental filling.

This should subside after a couple of days. You may be prescribed pain relievers to help ease the soreness after the treatment. A few days after the procedure, make sure to steer clear of sticky and hard foods.
