What Are the Steps in a Dental Cleaning Procedure?

Do you dread getting dental cleanings in Conroe? Believe us when we say you’re not the only one. Millions of Americans aren’t big fans of dental cleanings. Many of them are convinced that dental cleaning isn’t necessary.

So, why do you need to go to the clinic to have your teeth cleaned when you can do it at home? Professional teeth cleanings differ significantly from your oral care routine. The steps are more tedious, and your dentist uses special tools and instruments for a thorough clean.

What Are the Steps Involved in Dental Cleaning?

Oral Exam

Before your dentist starts cleaning your teeth, an oral exam is done first. Then, your dentist will use a concave mirror to check your teeth and gums for signs of cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Removal of Plaque and Tartar

After the oral exam, your dentist will use a scaler to remove plaque and hardened tartar on your teeth and along the gum line.  Plaque and tartar accumulated in between your teeth will also be removed. You can prevent plaque buildup by brushing and flossing two times a day, but plaque can calcify and turn into tartar if you miss certain areas. In this case, only your dentist can remove it.

Toothpaste Cleaning

Once your teeth are free of plaque and tartar, your dentist will use an electric toothbrush and gritty toothpaste for a deep clean. The toothpaste is just like regular toothpaste, but the consistency is more granular to thoroughly scrub your teeth. But don’t worry, it won’t wear your enamel down.

Flossing and Rinsing

Dentists are more meticulous in their flossing. First, they’ll ensure all the spaces between your teeth are free from food debris. Your dentist will also take note of the areas where your gums bleed easily. After flossing, you’ll be asked to rinse your mouth with liquid fluoride.

Fluoride Treatment

Last but not least, your dentist will apply a gel containing fluoride over your teeth and leave it there for about one minute to protect your teeth against cavities and tooth decay.
